The Borobudur Context

Borobudur is one of the most beautiful and significant monuments is the world. It is a UNESCO world heritage site as well as the largest Buddhist monument in the world. Built in c 650 AD by the ruling Sailendra family, it is a monument, temple and mandala of great complexity, artistic beauty and spiritual significance. Borobudur fell into disuse only 100 years after it was completed and was “lost” to the world until 1814 when it was

“re-discovered” by military surveyors commissioned by Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant-Governor of Java before establishing the city state of Singapore.
